The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) isa 200 years old this year – quite a milestone for any organisation. However, it’s all the more amazing given that the RNLI survives and thrives on voluntary donations from businesses and members of the public only – not single penny is statutory funding from the government.
The RNLI is crewed almost entirely by unpaid volunteers. However, paid or not, all crew members risk their lives to save others out at sea and around the coasts of the British Isles (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Ireland/Eire, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands).
SOS Radio Week was created the celebrate these amazing crew members, past and present. During this 200th anniversary year, SOS Radio Week registered stations will be able to use our SOS Radio Week 200 banner however they choose to promote this special year. Please note that SOS Radio Week is also used to promote the work of other voluntary organisations that work together to save lives around the coasts of the British Isles and out to sea. We do not wish to alienate these organisations by pushing this special year for the RNLI and are happy to promote other notable events for these organisations too.
These organisations include the National Coastwatch Institution, independent lifeboats and coastal rescue teams.
