Initial idea was ten year old David’s (M3LFC)
David (M3LFC) was licensed at the early age of just ten, way back in 2005. He had already demonstrated that he was up for Amateur Radio by gaining his Foundation license but wanted to show that he had what it took to silence those older Amateur Radio operators that M3’s were not a waste a space and did deserve their licenses.

David (M3LFC) was guest of honour at the Lythm St. Annes lifeboat stations
David has always had a healthy obssession for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), no doubt fuelled by his father’s, Derek (G7LFC), interest and governorship since the early nineties. Between them it was decided that David would operate a three month marathon, starting on the 1st February 2006. David was sponsored during the marathon and raised £250 for the RNLI. His reward was a day spent with the boats and crews of the Lythm St. Annes lifeboats – a truly memorable day.
RNLI SOS Day the catalyst
In 2007 the RNLI announced that it was going to run its first annual RNLI SOS national fund raising day on a Friday in January and Derek and David agreed that they’d do some fundraising for the event during the week leading up to the SOS Day. And that was it, SOS Radio Week was born.

SOS Radio Week continues to grow
Each year since 2007 the SOS Radio Week has grown, more Amateur Radio operators and groups have taken part and more money has been raised. Some participants donate the money they raise to specific stations and others donate it to the RNLI general funds. Either way, every single penny donated goes to support one of the most worthy of charities throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.
